I later joined the Georgia Speakers Association and never miss a beat—the meetings. One of my biggest goals was to become a member of the National Speakers Association. But I wasn’t qualified because I was not making an income as a speaker.
With the help of my fellow speakers, I later qualified to become a member. It did not stop there. I keep learning more and more.
The first time I attended a national convention was a major accomplishment. I met professional speaker, while working as a doorman, Dan Burrus one of the top futurists in America. He told me a story that hit home for me.
He told me to hang in there because when Les Brown, who is a celebrity speaker, first came to the same convention, he borrowed money and rode the bus to attend. Not long after that Les came back in a Learjet as a keynote speaker for the convention. I treasured his advice like diamond!
I did not wait for a break. I stepped out and began to create my own luck. With persistence, preparation, and commitment, I began to master the tools of the trade. Many successful speakers opened their hearts and souls to share information and experiences about the speaking business with me.
Several touched my life in a special way. They help bring the best out of me even though they didn’t know me very well. But ultimately, we are responsible for our success.
